FRIENDS OF THE UNIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES: THE SOUND OF BROADWAY’S MEAN STREETS
Featuring Professor of Musicology at UCLA, Raymond Knapp
Saturday, December 16th | 11a-1:30p | CTRL Collective – Playa Vista
UCLA Professor Raymond Knapp will take you on a tour of New York City’s edgier side through its representation in classic Broadway musicals, including Guys and Dolls (1950), Wonderful Town (1953), West Side Story (1957), Sweet Charity (1965), Company (1970) and Follies (1971).
Raymond Knapp has authored four books, on Brahms, Mahler, and the American musical, and has coedited two others. His published essays address a wide range of additional interests, including Beethoven, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, nationalism, musical allusion, music and identity, music and disability, and film music. His seventh book, on Haydn, musical camp, and German Idealism, is due out from Duke University Press in early 2018. At UCLA, Knapp has chaired the Department of Musicology and several campus committees, and currently serves as Academic Associate Dean in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, and Director of the UCLA Center for Musical Humanities.
